Wilkins Wins Leeds Xpress triathlon

Rodger Wilkins of TriClan in Lancashire won the Xtra Mile Events "Leeds Xpress Triathlon" 20 seconds ahead of second placed Adam Grice of Leeds University Triathlon Club, in a jaw dropping time of 1 hour 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Leeds Bradford Tri Club member Phil Goode, finished in third place. Wilkins and Grice both spectacularly beat the course record by well over a minute.

The women's race was won by Caroline Findlay with a notable time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 37 seconds. Findlay was closely followed by Annaliese Mawdsley from the Triangle Racing Team – Bianchi based in Horsforth. Mawdsley punctured on the cycle leg, repaired it herself and still finished second.

A field of 300 competitors started the race with a 400m swim in waves from the Grammar School at Leeds, before embarking on a tough cycle course through the hilly Yorkshire countryside. The triathlon finished with the third leg which was a 5km off-road run around the school grounds.

The course was well managed by a group of dedicated volunteers, including the Legion of Frontiersmen and Sports Leeds. Their enthusiasm provided welcome support for the competitors, encouraging them towards the finish line!

All competitors received a goody bag, and winners received various prizes from sponsors including Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, Up and Running, Nuun, Blue Seventy and Sunsport Sunscreen.
