Wolfe hunts down the competition at Llandudno Sea Triathlon
The 2nd Llandudno Sea Triathlon saw 450 competitors battle their way across the choppy waters of the Irish Sea, before cycling four laps of the Great Orme and finishing it all off with a challenging run up the Little Orme. Both Ormes (two huge rocky headlands, up to 679ft high) provided breath-taking views of the bay of Llandudno, and provided a scenic backdrop to the days race.
Phil Wolfe from the Mammoth Lifestyle Racing Team beat the course record, with an outstanding time of 2 hours 3 minutes and 7 seconds just pipping last years winner James Ratcliffe of Ceepo TFN to the post.
The ladies werent far behind with Eleanor Haresign of Glasgow Tri Club finishing with a terrific time of 2 hours 27 minutes and 56 seconds making the journey from Glasgow, definitely worthwhile!
A shorter distance sprint triathlon was run concurrently, and was won by Oly Stanley of Loughborough Triathlon RC, and triathlon novice Alison Smith from Macclesfield.
The entire course was excellently marshalled by volunteers, ensuring that the race ran smoothly, and even chasing goats off the cycle course (who obviously hadnt heard there was a Wolfe about!)
Organisers, Xtra Mile Events, were quick to praise their efforts: The support of the volunteers, combined with the thousands of spectators around the course created a superb atmosphere, and spurred athletes to achieve their best.
Thousands of pounds were raised for charities such as Skin Cancer Research, Aid Orphans in Malawi and Help for Heroes. Five competitors from Exopack Advanced Coatings in Wrexham raised over £5,000 for the Nightingale House Hospice in memory of Alan Parker.
With its stunning location and vista, and mainly closed roads, the Llandudno Sea Triathlon is becoming a must do race in the triathlon calendar, and this years race attracted competitors from as far afield as Australia and Germany. Amongst the entrants were a ballerina, police sergeant, teachers and even an opera singer!
All competitors received a goody bag, and winners received various prizes from sponsors including Blue Seventy, Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, Accelerade, Up & Running and Prosport Sunscreen.
Preparations for the Llandudno Sea Triathlon 2011 are already underway with the 17th July pencilled in.
The organisers hope to see many more there for another fantastic event next year!
