Northwich Triathlon Race Report: Hurri-Cain Storms to Victory
Hurri-Cain storms Northwich Triathlon
Surosa-sponsored triathlete Martin 'the Hurri-' Cain stormed to victory at the very first Northwich Triathlon, in a spectacular time of 50min 38sec - over 5minutes ahead of the second-placed competitor. A familiar face on the winners' podium, and fresh back from competing in "Ironman Lanzarote", 33-year old Cain has already won four of the Xtra Mile Events he has competed in so far this season. Another hot contender to win, Roger Barnes of team TriCentral/Zoot, was sorely disappointed when he suffered a puncture on the bike section; commenting that "Cain has become the man to beat".
Novice to the sport, 28-year old Celia Whelan overtook many more experienced triathletes to take first placed female in 1hr 8min 2sec. With such a successful introduction to the sport, it is hoped that Whelan will now become a regular face on the triathlon circuit!
Based at the Moss Farm Leisure Complex, the flat course on the Cheshire Plains produced some very fast times for the 400m swim, 17.4km cycle and 5km run. The event also attracted many novices to the sport, with 69 of them taking part, out of the field of 160 competitors.
The event also had a prickly surprise when an unusual trip hazard was spotted on the path by the exit from the pool: a sleeping hedgehog! However, competitors managed to avoid the spiky ball, who was completely unfazed by 160 pairs of wet feet splashing past, and remained asleep for the whole triathlon!
All competitors received a goody bag, and winners received various prizes from sponsors including Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, Zoggs, TriCentral, Sweatshop, Techniq Sport Therapy, Nokia, For Goodness Shakes!, Pure Blue, Sports Tours International, and Jointace. Marshals at the event included local groups Northwich Air Cadets and the newly-formed Mid-Cheshire Tri Club.
