A team of fire fighters narrowly beat the police to win the first ever National Emergency Services Triathlon Championships. The event, sponsored by VUE and organised by Xtra Mile Events, attracted triathletes from across the country from all of the emergency services, including fire, ambulance, police, and coastguards. In a very close finish, Martin Cain of Greater Manchester Fire Service beat policeman Martin Hynes by 3 seconds, in a time of 59min 03sec. The winning lady was Jacqui Slack of Staffordshire Fire Service, who crossed the line in a very impressive 01hr 04min 33sec. Blazing a trail to victory, the fire fighters' winning team was composed of 4 males and 2 females:

The triathlon was held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, and included a 750metre swim in a lake, followed by a 20km bike ride and 5km run.
