Alan Copland, of 'One Life Racing' club set a new course record at the Newton-le-Willows Triathlon on Sunday 29th June 2008, completing the 400m swim, 13.5mile bike ride and 3.5mile run in just 1hr 6mins 57secs - despite a number of torrential downpours which made the course very wet in places. The first female was local Winwick triathlete, Kate Dwyer, who finished in 1hr 28mins 26secs.
The event was full, with 200 competitors entered into this exciting shorter distance event. The swim took place in Selwyn Jones Sports Centre, and the bike and run courses went through local Newton-le-Willows countryside and parks. The multi-lap routes created many opportunities for faster athletes to overtake; and the buzz of the event was further enhanced by commentary from Manchester DJ Sarah Hall of Tameside 103.6FM; and market stalls courtesy of sponsors Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative and TriCentral.
