Despite unexpected rain and fog on the Peak District course, 162 competitors made it to the start line of the 2008 New Mills Triathlon. The race included a 400metre swim in the New Mills Leisure Centre, a 21.1km cycle section in the Derbyshire hills and a 7.4km run along the pretty Sett Valley Trail.

The winner, Martin Cain, of Greater Manchester Fire Service Triathlon Club, stormed home in an incredible 1hr 9mins 17secs: over 4 minutes ahead of the second placed competitor. With a time of 1hr 29mins 40secs, Lynn Griffiths, the first female, also did well, beating her next nearest rival by over two minutes.

Local club, High Peak Tri Club won the club category, with members Mat Ivings, Nick Doran and Damon Manning all putting in good performances. With half of the field being novices to the sport, the novice categories were also closely fought, and won by Martin Andrews and Rosie Fearon.
Competition was obviously fierce between some competitors as this was the last triathlon in the Xtra Mile Events Triathlon Series; and things had been hotting-up on the leader board, with several competitors in contention for the overall series prizes. However, this final set of results produced two run away leaders: Kate Dwyer and, to top off an already successful day, the race winner Martin Cain. Both received £100 Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative vouchers.
The event was supported by Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, Sweatshop, TriCentral, Triathlete's World Magazine, 'For Goodness Shakes' and RedBull; and marshalled by Glossop Army Cadets.
