At the Newton-le-Willows Triathlon, on 26th April, the men's race was closely fought between Martin Cain and defending 2008 champion Alan Copland. In the end Cain took the win by nearly two minutes in an overall time of 1hr 09m 24s. Local Winwick athlete, Kate Dwyer, took the female title in a time of 1hr 31m 07s, beating her nearest rival, Gill Crennel by just under a minute.

It was a beautiful sunny day which greeted the 120 competitors who took part in this event – now in its third year. The athletes completed a 400m swim, 22km bike and 6.8km run.

Prizes, goody bags and other support were provided by sponsors including Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative, TriCentral, Sweatshop, Nokia, RedBull, For Goodness Shakes!, Pure Blue, Sports Tours, Zoggs, and Jointace.
